An all-round performance from Durham Women led them to an impressive 6 wickets win over Surrey Women in the Women’s One-Day Cup2026. Yorkshire mustered 179 in their first innings and set Durham a target of just 180 to win, which Durham breezed past with ease at 183 for four from only 36.4 overs.
Surrey almost avoided a dismal follow-on after being put in to bat on winning the toss and, though they never quite found their rhythm against a Durham side with only one change from the Specsavers County Championship win over Nottinghamshire last week, at least pushed past 200. Regular wickets meant that the visitors could never truly settle and they ended up 179 all out in 39.4 overs. Although some useful scores were made by a number of Surrey batters, none were able to turn their promising innings into match-winning ones.
The only reason Surrey were able to claw their way through the innings as they were was the relentless discipline from Durham’s bowlers. With the ball, Katie Levick was a central figure taking four wickets and building pressure on the batting side throughout. The 36-year-old Grace Thompson Villiers also made her presence felt, with three wickets and played a pivotal role in breaking up the Surrey middle order. Their work meant that Surrey were left never in control of the game.
Durham, in reply and despite the odd wicket or two tumbling, started the chase with a bit of conviction. Skipper Hollie Armitage was the mainstay with a steady knock of 76 runs, setting up the chase and keeping her side in check. With a solid mix of patience and well-timed attacking shots, she had Surrey’s bowlers clearly frustrated as the rest of Durham calmly chipped away at the target.
Heather Graham chipped in with an unbeaten 40 to see the job done after Armitage had departed. Durham comfortably reached the total, with her existing coolness at the crease and others chipping in around her to keep control of the chase.
This success reaffirmed Durham’s credentials in the competition and also emphasised their strength in both departments. While Surrey crumbled to well below par, their own bowlers set the tone, while a controlled chase was finished off by their batters with a professionalism that came as no surprise.
The defeat also highlighted flaws with a bat for Surrey who have not made the most of critical moments. The other positive for Durham was that this was a comprehensive win, and they will take plenty of confidence from it – their depth blended well with their experience and ability to execute under pressure.
